Find the cause: If it was from hypothyroidism or thallium poisoning, your life depends on its being detected and treated. If it's from telogen effluvium, it'll eventually heal. If it is from alopecia areata, embrace it. Male or female, it's cleaner and easier to manage. One of my physician friends who has it loves it, and many of the best athletes / fitness models shave everything.
