Broken skin ?!: Any break in the skin can provide access to tetanus spores that may set up in the wound and eventually generate tetanus toxin. The tetanus spores are everywhere: the soil of the road, contamination of structures, off the hands of emergency personnel. If you cannot confirm a tetanus shot within the past 10 years, it is routine to give one after motor vehicle accidents when any wound is present.
