Yes, you're right: The swelling should have been going down daily after the first day or two. You may have an infection. See your dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation and appropriate treatment.

No: If swelling is significant, you may have infection. You may also have a dry socket, which may not be infection, but what you would call abnormal healing. Smokers get these often. Food in the surgical site can also be irritating. You need to see the surgeon. They will assess and will likely clean out any debris and pack some medication into the area to help you heal normally.
