Depends: Usually swelling in the back (posterior) aspect of the elbow results from olecranon bursitis. That the area is purple in color makes me think that somehow something was torn and it bled. If you don't have any problems straightening your elbow overhead then the odds of it being a torn muscle are much less. I would get it checked out with your physician.

Collection of Blood: When you hit your elbow ( even minor) a small amount of blood oozes out under the skin. This blood dilutes with watery fluid from surrouding tissue. Go to your doctor. He might put a needle in the lump and withdraw the bloody fluid. This is all that is needed. If no fluid comes out then it has to be investigated further.
