Spotting: Depends on your age, history, medications, exam, and symptoms. A doctor will be able to examine you, rule out pregnancy, polyps, cysts, infection, vaginitis and when appropriate, perform additional testing such as ultrasound, cytology, cultures, lab work, etc to determine the cause. Sometimes this happens even in "normal" patients. Can be a side effect of oral contraceptives too. Get checked out.
