A member asked:

Can sinus cysts or polyps cause a deviated septum or is it the other way around ( deviated septum causes cysts or polyps)?

Both: Septal deviation may be present without the presence of cysts or polyps. Sometimes if there are intranasal masses, they can cause pressure on the septum and cause deviation. Alternatively, if septal deflections are such that they obstruct the passage of mucous from the sinuses, this can lead to sinusitis and ultimately the development of cysts and polyps.

Polyps: Typically they are not connected. Polyps and cysts are usually an allergic phnomenon. A deviated septum is an anatomic abnormality which is either congenital or traumatically induced.

Deviated septums: they are all separate issues. Have your nose evaluated by a board certified otolaryngologist.
