Unknown: While we don't entirely know what causes these, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and crohn's) appears to be caused by an autoimmune mechanism. There is a degree of genetic susceptibility, which seems to be higher in crohn's. However other theories, such as a virus as a cause, may also play a role. There are many other forms of colitis that may mimic these, and only a doctor can tell.
