A member asked:

How do heart stents work for people who suffer with heart attacks?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Open blocked vessels: Heart attacks occur because of blockages in the arteries which feed the heart. A stent is a wire cage which helps hold a blocked artery open. The artery is typically is opened with a small balloon which forces the blocked vessel open. The stent is then placed in this area to prevent the vessel from closing back down. This re openned vessel imporves blood flow to the sick area of the heart.
