Evaluation: A distended stomach is not ascites. An extended abdomen (area below the diaphram) may be from ascites. In any case an evaluation of the cause is needed. If ascites then imaging and likely a paracentesis for fluid analysis (diagnostic) and distension relief (therapeutic) may be performed. Ascites can be caused by liver disease, cancer, inflammation/infection (eg tb), and many other causes.
