Most likely: Circumstance is a severe sprain, which can be quite painful. Ice and elevation. Go to the pharmacy and get an air cast. They provide quite a bit of lateral support.

Ankle Sprain: X-rays only show bone. When you injure your ankle you can injure the ligaments. Ankle sprains can cause severe pain, swelling and purpura. This is all due to the fact that rupturing of ligaments and small vessels occur. Since no fractures were seen your best bet is to treat as a sprain. This is usually treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation
