The dentist: See a dentist for a complete and thorough examination. They have very different symptoms and appearances. Don’t try to diagnose yourself. Let the professional examine you and determine what dental problems you have and what treatment is required. Little problems are easily solved if caught early.

Pain: Usually gum disease won't cause any pain. Your gums may be red, swollen and you see bleeding when you brush or floss, but it won't hurt. If you are having sharp pain or sensitivity to hot or cold, you may have a big cavity. Get to the dentist!
