Will braces help with fix a gummy smile?

5 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Yes if young: For the most part, orthodontic treatment can reduce a gummy smile in growing patients, its a matter of intruding the front teeth relative to the rest of the teeth. It can be done in a minor way in adults, but only orthognathic surgery will ideally treat this. There is the possibility of a gingivectomy, removal of gum tissue by laser or surgery as well, and is effective if careful.

Yes,: It is more successful in a growing child, especially in an extraction case. It is aided with the use of high pull j-hook headgears and often t-loop archwires. We have reduced gingival display up to a centimeter in adults and 2.5 cm. In children without surgery.

To some extent: Over-erupted front teeth can be intruded with braces. Vertical growth can be reduced with a number of orthodontic devices. If patient has vertical maxillary excess (long upper jaw), however, the solution may require jaw surgery as well as braces. See an orthodontist to evaluate your particular condition and a discussion of the solutions available just for you.

Gummy smile: Diagnosis, diagnosis, diagnosis. In my experience, usually it does not work. Orthognathic surgery is the best option for the right case.
