Only an x-ray: Can tell, if its a small fracture and there is no obvious dislocation. You can have significant pain, swelling and limited range of motion with a sprain that can last 4-6 weeks. In other words, it can be a tough call.

See your PCP to get: An xray after an examination. Without an xray its difficult to determine it. You will be having pain, tenderness, maybe a deformity and inability to use your finger without hurting. Good luck.

X-ray: The only way to know for sure if something is fractured is to get an x-ray. See a board certified orthopaedic hand surgeon for evaluation and treatment.
