Need X-rays: Severe ankle sprains may cuase broken ankle bones. Need to see a podiatrist for set of x-rays to evaluate if you have a broken ankle or not.

Xray: If you really want to know, you get an x-ray. For on field evaluation, we look for focal bone tenderness and inability to bear weight.
