Can myopia be prevented?

Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
No: There is no known way to prevent myopia. It is familial in many cases. However, it is believed that a person who spends a lot of time looking at objects (tv screens, computer screens, books, etc.) at close distances puts pressure on his eyeballs due to the actions of the eye muscles during close focusing, thus changing the shape of the eyeballs and causing myopia. This belief has not been proven.
A 31-year-old member asked:

What's the difference between myopia and astigmatism. Can you have astigmatism without having myopia?

2 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Danny Proffitt
Family Medicine 43 years experience
Two separates: Myopia is very near vision and need for glasses beyond a foot or so. You may can read when very close to you but cannot see beyond arms length. Astigmatism is an irregular contour of the cornea and causes waviness and blurring in the pattern of sight. You can have one without the other. Your eye care professional can examine you and correct most of these problems. Seeing it clearer?

Does reading from computer screens cause nearsightedness?

Dr. Andrew Shatz

No: Nearsightedness is programmed into the shape of the eyes. Some studies have loosely linked use of nightlights and excessive near work by young children with nearsightedness, but it is not conclusive. Feel free to use the computer as you normally do.

Yes: Nearsighted eyeglass (or contact) correction will be denoted on the prescription as a (-) power and a number (e.g. -2.75) which would be a nearsighted person with a power of minus 2.75 diopters.
A 42-year-old member asked:

What can prevent degenerative myopia with associated atrophy?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Michael Ham
Ophthalmology 27 years experience
Nothing!: Nothing that we know of! two treatments being researched. One is scleral buckling, the other is early systemic treatment with 7-methylxanthine. (do internet search). Since the condition is similar to macular degeneration, the supplements researched in the areds i and ii studies may slow progression as well, this has not been researched as far as i know.
