Complicated question: Pacemakers are used when a person has heart rhythms that are too fast, too slow, or may "degenerate" into a dangerous, life-threatening rhythm. Not knowing your individual situation - and not being a cardiologist, i guess the best way to avoid a pacer is to prevent heart disease in the first place. The basics: weight control, blood pressure and cholesterol control, smoking cessation, etc.
