Herpes: Cold sores are herpes. If you are getting that many, i would suggest going on a maintenance dose of Valtrex (500mg a day) or Acyclovir (800mg a day). It doesn't necessarily mean you have a deficient immune system. Stress plays a huge role in these outbreaks. You should also have your immunoglobulins and vitamin d levels checked.

Stress or citus.: Canker sores may be caused by stress. Also if you eat a lot of citrus or tangy foods they may increase. Hope that helps.

Uncontrolled virus: This is a recurrent "herpes" virus for which an anti-viral oral medication can be prescribed. This virus can be contracted/spread via saliva and sexual activity.

Possibly a virus: Some of the simplex viruses are known to be related to canker sores. Check with you dentist as there are medications you can use if you find the area is starting to be infected before the ulcer forms.
