Bad prognosis at 85: Renal insufficiency may improve with intravenous fluids and other medications to a certain point if there is only dehydration. When the kidney funtion has been progressively(years) bad for some time or when the damage to the kidneys is severe (recent onset) it gets to a point that only kidney transplant (younger patients) or dialysis may prolong life but with high morbidity and mortality.

Depends on the cause: Depends on the cause Acute renal failure caused by urinary tract obstruction in large bladder or kidney stones can be cured or reversed. Acute kidney failure due to side effect of medications also can often reversed. Patient has chronic renal failure and it gets Progressive to the kidneys shut down as a serious prognosis. In general the only treatment is long-term dialysis
