Only if Spock: This maneuver was popularized by leonard nimoy as spock on star trek. It is not possible to do this in reality.

Please don't rry: Blunt force to the neck can cause a variety of life threatening injuries, and syncope (passing out) may be the least of your worries. Carotid dissection, esophageal injury, tracheal collapse, or a head injury are all possible -- please do not punch people in the neck.

Probably normal: Your jugular vein will pulsate normally with each heart beat (visually at least). Exaggerated pulsation in the jugular vein can be a sign of a cardiac problem however, and should be pointed out to your doctor.

A 28-year-old female asked:
When I am lying down or bending over a lump on a vein on the neck from the left side appears. Not seen when standing. Can this be treated?

Dr. Nick (Donald) Morrison answered
Phlebology 30 years experience
Usually normal: When you bend over, there is more pressure on the neck veins so more blood expands them and when you stand back up or lie down, they are smaller. The lump can be checked out by your doctor but is probably just a variation in the vein wall thickness.
We don't do vein treatments of neck veins.
People that lift weights and have low body fat can have prominent veins in their necks and arms.

Discuss echo and ultrasound of the veins. It may or may not be useful.

A 48-year-old member asked:
Lying flat should neck veins normally be flat or destended?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Thomas Wright answered
Phlebology 29 years experience
It depends : There are multiple factors that go into neck veins pressure.Your position whether you are lying flat , the position of the bed you are lying on whether it is flat, whether you are relaxed , if you bear down or valsalva that will distend your neck veins. Other medical factors influence this as well, but yes your vein should be flat if all of the other things are optimized to keep them flat.
