What tests are done to detect if someone has diabetes before that person starts showing symptoms of it?

Many: The simplest test to diagnose diabetes is the fasting blood test (blood draw). If the blood sugar number is > or = to 126 twice, then you have diabetes. Equally simple is a blood draw for hemoglobin a1c. If it's > or = to 6.5% twice, then you have diabetes. You can also mix and match the two tests above. The last test is the glucose tolerance test but it is more time consuming.

Blood sugar: Fatsing blood sugar, post-prandial blood sugar and hgba1c. In borderline situations a full glucose tolerance test may be done, but that is seldom necessary.

3 tests: There are 3 general tests that can be done. 1. Fasting blood sugar 2. 2 hour glucose challenge test 3. Hemoglobin a1c your doctor can help decide which is best for you.
