Why isn't the gabapentin that's prescibed to me by a doctor helping my syringomyelia pain?

If your pain was at a "10 out of 10" level, expect Gabapentin to bring it down to a "3 or 4" but not to a "0". Keeping a daily pain chart can help you objectively evaluate any intervention. Most patients discover how much Gabapentin was doing when they try stopping it.
