A member asked:

My 3.5yr old has head & chest congestion. is it safe to give him mucinex & benadryl (diphenhydramine) together to dry up his congestion before it irritates his asthma?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can cause drying of the congestion in the lungs and actually can make his asthma worse. Lots of oral fluids would be better, and start treating his asthma early if it occurs. Mucinex may help loosen the secretions, but likely won't help his wheezing.
