What caused them: Go see a doctor. Do not drain them at this time until the cause can be determined. Did she burn her ankle? Did something sting her. Does she have underlying kidney issues? An evaluation is needed. See your doctor or a podiatrist.

Possible stasis : Is you wife is older-- she could be at risk for venous stasis- which is incompetent valves in the veins causing blood to pool at the surface of the skin. This causes the blood to break down and ulcerate the skin, causing wounds and venous stasis ulcers. There are a variety of other reasons for wounds in the legs, see your physician for a good history and physical.
