Pharyngitis is : Inflammation of the pharynx, ie the throat. The course of the inflammation is related to the cause. Is it infectious? Chemical? If it is bad and lasts long, you might consider being evaluated for antibiotic therapy.

Depends: Pharyngitis can certainly be painful and cause swelling. The course/time of symptoms are related to the cause/pathogen that is responsible. An internet consultation is simply inadequate to answer such a question, and therefore an md consult is required. Good luck!
