Many Possibilities: There are lots of reasons for tooth pain. Cavities, broken teeth, infection, trauma, unhealthy gums, exposed roots, etc. If you are having a toothache, your dentist should be able to determine the cause after a thorough examination and diagnosis.

Depends: Toothaches are caused by an injury to the pulp of your tooth. This is where the nerve endings of your tooth are located. The pulpal injury can be due to a deep cavity, broken or loose tooth, or bacterial infection.

Too many!: It can be tooth-related or not. Assuming it's tooth related, then the most common reason is tooth decay. However, if it is not tooth related, it could be the gum, the wisdom tooth, the sinus, the muscles, the tmj, etc. The list can go on and on!

Inflammation: Inflammation of the nerves in the tooth or surrounding tissues will cause a toothache. The inflammation can be caused by trauma, a cavity, a non-vital nerve, even a cracked filling or tooth. You'll need to be evaluated by a dentist to determine the cause.

Many causes: A toothache can be brought on by trauma, decay, gum and bone support problems, sinus infections, infections, etc. The nerve (pulp) inside the tooth may become inflamed/irritated and create pain and ache, either temporarily or for long duration. If there is doubt, go see a dentist.
