What should i do after a bunionectomy?

Listen to your doc!: General principles after bunionectomy include rest, ice, elevation, keeping the dressing dry, and taking pain medication as needed. However, for specific instructions, you need to check with your surgeon as the post-surgery protocols can vary greatly depending upon the exact bunonectomy performed, how the surgery went, and how the surgeon manages his patients.

Rest and relax: Immediately after bunion surgery your best bet would be to rest and elevate your feet. Post operative pain will be less if you limit the swelling by elevating the feet. Keep the bandage dry and clean and follow you doctors' instructions.

Elevate!: After foot surgery gravity is your enemy. Keep your dressing clean, dry, and intact, and pick a good spot to sit and elevate the foot. The more you elevate, the less you swell. The less you swell, the less you hurt. Your surgeon may give you additional pain medication as well. Abide by the directions your surgeon gave you for weight bearing as well.
