Exam and Gait: Hello, After an injury to the ankle, one would evaluate how much pain with mobility is present, ability to bear-weight, gross physical appearance, presence of ecchymosis/bruising , and obtaining an xray can all lead to a diagnosis of ankle fracture. Feel better!

Fracture: The best way is an xray, but to determine without xay, did it swell up quickly and where does it hurt. Does it hurt on the ankle bones or ligaments. Some old fashioned methods are to put a tuning fork on the bone and if it hurts with the vibration it may be a fracture.
