Possible: But many dental problems are painless until it is too late. So how would you know you have good oral health without an exam with radiographs?

Not a great idea.: If you have been to dental or hygiene school and really know what you're doing, you might pull this off. In the real world, prevention of dental disease is like taking a road trip without stopping for gas or changing your oil: you can always walk to the service station, but odds are it will take longer, cost more, and be frustrating ending in a less than ideal result.

No: Would it be possible not to loose hair even if you shampoo every day? Not all oral health problems are hygiene related. Also, there are places you can't see and that are difficult to reach. Cheaper to prevent problems than to treat break-down. For best oral health, please have check-up and cleaning as often as your dentist recommends.

It's impossible: to achieve without a dental cleaning. The purpose of the professional dental cleaning and polishing is to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean for a lifetime.

If you live like...: a pre-westernized aborigine. Examination of pre-westernized aborigines from PNG and other places to have very good teeth without ever having seen a dental professional. Once they adopted the western lifestyle, including eating processed foods, white bread, and sugar, their emotional, mental, dental and somatic health suffered significantly. Tooth decay, obesity, and heart disease rates took off.

Not likely: Regular examination and professional cleanings keep you in optimum dental health. There are many things which may be occurring in your mouth that are not obvious to you and may not have outward signs to demand your attention. The x-ray imaging and clinical examination help detect these early and allow for more conservative treatment. The cleanings remove calculus (you can't) and monitor tissue health
