NIMH: National institutes of mental health have the best information that is supported by experts in the field of autism research & treatment. Be wary of diet, vitamin, hyperbaric chamber or other unorthodox treatments, as they have not been proven to be effective. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/autism-spectrum-disorders-pervasive-developmental-disorders/index.shtml.

Alternative View: www.autism.com (for info you will not find at the nimh) one study showing hyperbaric treatment did show effectiveness: http://www.Springerlink.Com/content/675g44042634407w/ some studies are small and therefore not considered strong proof. Anecdotes and testimonies and success stories are a form of proof, but not up to academic journal standards.

Ridiculous: To say that testimonies, stories and anecdotes are a source of proof, despite not holding up to scientific journal standards is ridiculous. These standards exist in order to ascertain the truth as best we are able. Look for help from these proven sources of therapy, not unproven potentially dangerous therapies, such as chelation.

Multiple treatments: Early idenification. Applied behavioral analysis, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medications for severe aggression, hyperactivity, or even with repetitive behaviors. Risperdal is actually an fda approved medication to treat autism. Group therapy. Support groups. And dont forget a multivitamin!

Some therapy options: All of dr. J's recs. Are great. Evidence-based therapies include applied behavioral analysis, the developmental-individual difference-relationship based model (dir), & the early start denver model. Early entry, daily participation, & intensive/repetitive therapy at the child's developmental are keys to success. Later, pragmatics of language & social skills group therapy.
