High triglycerides: If your triglycerides are more than 500 even though you're on Lipitor (atorvastatin) 40mg you and your doctor should consider adding another medication. There are several options available like fenofibrates or omega-3 fatty acids like lovaza. Over the counter fish oil is not the same. Dont forget diet and exercise still have a big role to play -especially with triglycerides.

Targeting TG's: The recommendations are to treat triglycerides >500 to lower the risk of pancreatitis. Statins (such as lipitor) can be used to lower tg's, but can also be used to lower ldl, non-hdl cholesterol and apob or LDL particle number. When the tg's are greater than 500 other medications such as fibrates or high dose omega 3 fatty acids (4 gms a day) are very useful for tg lowering. Speak to your doctor.
