Hypercalcemia: Many people have vit d deficiency, and the measurement of 25-vit d is highly reliable. Measurement of 1, 25 d is less reliable as a nutrition marker, and usually reserved to workup hypercalcemia. The inflammatory cells (macrophages) in certain conditions (sarcoidosis, tb, inflam bowel dis, rheum arthritis) make 1, 25 d and can elevate blood calcium. Renal failure and some HIV meds lower 1, 25 d.

Vitamin D: This test is the most accurate way to measure how much vit d you have in your body. Vit d helps control calcium and phosphate levels in the body. It is to determine if you have too much or too little vit d. Normal values are 30.0 to 74.0 ng/ml. Too low, could mean lack of sunlight, inadequate d in your diet, etc... Vit d is fat soluble, it stays in your body. Only take what the us rda reccomends.
