Pediatricians, help!: I've not heard of testing newborns' meconium (bowel movement) for Cocaine before; I have to beg ignorance here. My deep concern is with why you may be asking this question? Are you referring to your own newborn, and concerned that Cocaine use may be detected? Or are you worried about a child in danger? If either of these is the case, please speak with the doctor or hospital social worker.

Up to 3 days: As long as a baby hasn't pass all meconium, it can be in there. Please, don't use Cocaine or other drugs during your pregnancy for the reason of possibility of neonatal abstinence syndrome in your baby. Your baby might suffer from the bad withdrawal same way as adults do, but worse, since he/she couldn't do anything about it and they are just victims of maternal drug use.

Months: The meconium is the go to place I look for drug exposure in a newborn.When Child and Family Services designates a baby is at risk, the mothers urine and babies meconium are sent for study.Gas chromatography on meconium can detect any exposures going back months. Hair could also be uses but is technically difficult.
