May last 6 weeks: Coughs after viral illnesses may last a long time- even 6-8 weeks! this lingering cough is usually caused by mucus that drips from the nose into the throat, causing irritation and thus the cough. This is also why its worse at night, when you are lying down. New fever, an increase in coughing or difficulty breathing should prompt you to see a doctor.
