Needs Evaluated: Dark blood would indicate a higher source of bleeding, such as ulcer. Hemorrhoid s would bleed red, and fissures would also, plus have significant pain. Regardless, blood in the stool needs evaluated, and endoscopic work up will probably be needed. See your doctor who will direct the diagnostic work up and referrals. Good luck.

Anal fissures: Would cause bright red blood from the rectum. Darker blood suggests bleeding from further up inside the colon. If he has not had a colonoscopy he needs one. Please see your primary doctor to be referred to a gastroenterologist or surgeon who does colonoscopies.
