Depends: Over 12 months, the most common cause is allergies. There are other causes, so your child should be seen by their doctor. If allergies are diagnosed, there are 2 main approaches. Usually, you would try an antihistamine. Frequently, nasal steroid sprays are more effective, since they help the swelling which causes congestion. The other approach is to test for what your child is allergic to.

Stuffy nose: Stuffy nose could be a sign of allergic rhinitis. You may need to check you child's immediate environment to look for what triggers his allegies. Running a humidifier, suctioning the nose helps. A trial of antihistamine might help, especially the once daily.

Neti pot: If you understand how to use neti pot you can irrigate the child's nose with salted warm water and tincture of iodine - iodine kills germs and salt water irrigates this area. The other option is to have small inhaler with oil of oregano which when inhaling kills the germs - viral, bacterial and fungal infections.
