Rare: There are a few very rare causes of dm1 in infants(metabolic or infectious). Pregnancy induced diabetes is a metabolic thing in mom & not passed to baby(although baby will be watched for low bs) parents do not pass dm1 to their baby although they pass a higher lifetime risk.Dm2 is not an issue for babies.

Depends: Not easy to answer. Some have a genetic predisposition to get diabetes. Certain triggers can increase ones chances of getting diabetes. These triggers include smoking, obesity, low vitamin d, fatty diet even a history of physical abuse. Pick your parents well!
