A member asked:

How many times should a teenager blink in a minute?

About 4-6 times: It varies by individual, but we tend to blink once every 10-15 seconds on average. While we can increase or decrease this rate at will, there is a base amount of blinkning that is automatic. As long as there are no specific eye or other medical problems, the rate of blinking should not be a concern. Certain diseases may decrease the blink rate, but would have other symptoms as well.

Varies: The human blink rate is affected by such factors as age, environment, and activity. Teenagers are often engaged in such activities as reading or computer work, which will reduce the blink rate from the average 10 times per minute to 3-4 times per minute. This is one of the reasons teenagers tend to develop eye fatigue and fluctuations in vision. See your local eye physician if symptoms occur.
