Often Local: Local anesthesia is effective in allowing surface screws to be removed with minimal discomfort. Deeper anesthesia is required to remove rods and related hardware from the back and in cases where long bones are involved. Your ortho md will best advise you based on experience and clinical judgment. He/she would not want you to experience discomfort.

Local or general: It can be done under local with a good technique and heavy sedation. It is not likely though. The majority of the anesthesiologists will choose either regional (spinal or epidural), a nerve block depending of the site, or straight general anesthesia.

IM rod removal : Requires either a general or regional anesthesia. Sedation won't be enough.
