Possibly: Heart disease and diabetes are associated with each other, but are not exclusive. Each can exist without the other. If there are any concerns, he can be tested for diabetes to give an answer.

Some basics: Adult onset diabetes comes on gradually.It reflects the fact that they continue to make their own insulin (not like little kids who don't). At some point, which is hard to pin down, their insulin production does not match the need. A Test called the A1C hemoglobin can reflect blood sugar levels for the previous 3 months but not 6. So yes, he can have a problem now he didn't have then.
