Unknown.: I don't think anyone knows the answer to this. It is not commonly reported with benadryl, (diphenhydramine) but there are many medications that can cause this sensation.

Pus: Pus tastes metallic. Benedryl will dry your mouth and mucus membranes. Without being diluted with saliva you may be tasting an infection in your mouth, sinus, or throat. The reason you are getting an IV push may be a hint of what is going on.
