A challenge: It is not always obvious. The "mucus plug" is more a concept than an actual object. As the term cervix matures, softens and dilates, the mucus barrier will be excreted. This may appear as a thick wad of mucus with small amount of blood or if slowly lost, just an increase in vaginal discharge. Confirmation usually comes with a cervical exam showing effacement and dilation.
