Depends: The best indicator is what makes them go away? It is usually a vascular problem. If he must hang them over the side of the bed, it is likely due to poor blood flowing to the feet (arteries). If he has to elevate them at night, it is likely because the blood is not returning well to his heart (veins).

Here's the trick!: Nocturnal muscle cramps don't represent a vascular problem, especially if you don't have cramping when you walk. Quinine (q) is the best thing to prevent nocturnal cramps, and now that malaria is a thing of the past, the only way to get q is by drinking tonic water. Top brands like schwepps and canada dry contain q and so drink some each evening and see if that helps. Gin or vodka is optional!
