Acupuncture: Its never advised to treat yourself if you don't have the appropriate certification. Accupressure may be a safer alternative instead.

Yes there are : I would not practice acupuncture on yourself unless you are well trained and confident in your skill set (i.e. Certified). A poorly placed needle could drop a lung, enter an abdominal organ, cause bleeding or nerve injury. I do acupuncture on myself - but i only do things that I am trained and certified to do.

Bad idea: Popular 5-6 years ago, a large multi-center study published in 12/2008 showed there was no difference in success rates with ivf in couples that did acupuncture vs. Not doing acupuncture. In my experience, that is true, but the one benefit I have seen is that it definitely relaxes you prior to the procedure. Needs to be done by an experienced person. If done wrong, shown to decrease success rates.

Shocker - NO!: I started teaching my patients how to do "puncture" to help me help them. This is called dry needling. I instruct them on points and needles. Mostly on the face, jaw scalp and sinus area, foot and hand, knees and lateral thigh band. I warn them of danger zones and give specific warnings. They are very cooperative-appreciative. The goal is to free them from visits/time off work.

Yes, dangers: Becoming competent in the science and art of acupuncture requires much training and experience. This goes beyond needle insertion, because you need to diagnose your state accurately to know where to stick them. Also, many points can be difficult to reach safely on your own body -- pneumothorax can easily result. Why not work with a trained acupuncturist? Er visits for chest tubes aren't cheap.
