Surgery or ERCP: This is complicated. The liver empties into the intestine via the bile duct and the sphincter of oddi is the valve at the end. A GI doc can do a scope evaluation and actually cut and enlarge the opening of the duct that could be causing bile to back up and cause pain. Be prepared for many appointments, many scopes, and try to keep your patience and compliance with recommendations high. Good luck!

ERCP first step: Sphincter of oddi is the circular muscle at the end of the common bile duct as it enters the intestine and is part of what regulates when bile empties into the intestine. This disorder is very uncommon, but we may be seeing an increase in incidence in patients who have had weight loss surgery. Typical symptoms are pain after meals. Your bowel movements are unlikely related. Seek advice.
