Anyone know what is a heart murmur?

Heart valve sounds: A murmur is the sound that occurs as blood passes the heart valve(s) when the valve is closed or closing. A valve that does not close completely can allow a back flow of blood resulting in a murmur. These sounds may or may not be problematic, but all murmurs should be evaluated by a physician.

Heart sound/ noise: It's a heart sound/ noise that doctors can hear during a physical exam and it's related to blood flow through the different valves in the heart or through abnormal holes in the heart muscle. They can make the doctor decide to order an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) to get a better evaluation of a potential problem.

Turbulent flow: When fluids flow smoothly, they make no noise (imagine a peaceful, quiet stream); when there is turbulence, they make noise (imagine a raging river). This is a murmur, turbulent flow through the heart, which makes noise. It can be associated with the valves, with various malformations within the heart. Many are benign (flow mumur in pregnancy) but some are bad (aortic stenosis). Talk 2 M.D.
