What sort of tests would a dentist perform for a jaundiced 55year old man before an extraction?

Clotting time: Jaundice is a major sign of liver or hepatic disease. Many people with compromised livers have less ability to clot. Before an extraction is contemplated, see an md for reason for jaundice, and if clotting problems are suspected consult with an oral surgeon.

No tests!!: Dentist should refuse to perform any procedure on a jaundiced patient until a full workup and diagnosis is made by an internist or hepatologist regarding the cause of the jaundice.

Test of intelligence: Any time there is any medical consideration, the dentist should have a consultation with the treating physician in order to work as a team to do the best thing for the patient. The dentist needs to know what can and cannot be done for his\her patient, and what precautions are necessary to be followed. Sometimes certain treatments need to be postponed or modified.
