Depends on situation: You will need to sort out the origin of the jaundice. If it is all direct reacting, it falls into a group that includes infection, hepatitis, biliary atresia, metabolic disorders (galactosemia), & genetic syndromes. Once your treatment team discovers the issue, the ease of treatment or danger can be understood.

Urgent evaluation: Need to have the child seen by the pediatric GI physician urgently.. Perhaps visit the nearest er preferably a children's hospital er.. And child needs to be admitted for prompt diagnosis. It can be dangerous and have long term effects.

Depends upon : Direct bilirubin level of 6 mg/dl suggests bile flow obstruction. As long as underlying cause(s) is identified and dealt properly, elevated bilirubin per se is not of much concern.
