Not a hiatal hernia!: What you are describing is not typical for a hiatal hernia. That pain causes more pain that is similiar more to indigestion. What you are describing is more typical for people having problems with their gallbladder. If you have not had your gallbladder removed then please see your physician as soon as possible if you are still experiencing pain.

Gallbladder: Other than an association with heartburn and acid reflux, there are typically no symptoms from a hiatal hernia. The symptoms you are describing sound more like pain due to gallstones, or "biliary colic." this pain is usually associated with nausea, often is prompted by a fatty meal, and most commonly occurs at night. It often happens in women over age forty after multiple childbirths.
