A member asked:

What would the er do for someone with severe case of influenza? would they do a cbc or any blood work?

Not much: If you're otherwise healthy, tamiflu which works against the virus only shortens the course of the illness by one day. The bloodwork would not be helpful except to rule out other causes for your symptoms. Most flu tests are nasal swabs.

Symptoms: They would treat symptoms and make sure there is no secondary infection. For example, they may give IV fluids for dehydration. If there are chronic illnesses, then they will make sure those are in control. The only treatment for influenza is tamiflu (oseltamivir) but that doesn't require an er visit.
