White patches on lip: Slowly progressive white patches anywhere in the oral cavity can be an indication of "leukoplakia" ('white plaques') which sometimes turns into cancer. It is more common in smokers and those who drink alcohol. If it is persistent for more than a month, you should see a doctor to see if a biopsy is warranted. (it usually is.).

Hard to say: Without a clinical exam, it is tough to diagnose your condition. It could be anything from a canker sore to lip biting to oral cancer. If you condition does not resolve itself, within 2 weeks, please see your local dentist.
